2018年のGracie（グレイシー）の名を冠したデビューアルバムは、彼に対する過剰な期待から生じていた疑いを見事に払拭するきっかけとなりました。
2015年半ばから2017年末までの間、Gracie（グレイシー）の最初の作品が、名高いプロデューサーのMarkus Dravs（マルクス・ドラヴス（Florence + the Machine（フローレンス＋ザ・マシン）, Arcade Fire（アーケード・ファイヤ）））の監督下でレコーディングされた際、Gracie（グレイシー）は自身の作品について「私の人生で最も暗く、最も過酷で、不確実な時間」を捉えたものだと語っています。 「Last Words（ラストワーズ）」がGracie（グレイシー）の人生を変えました。彼が作曲するや否やすぐに、大きな金額での契約や英雄Jeff Buckley（ジェフ・バックリー）との比較が報道されました。音楽業界について知識が少なく、まだ数曲しか自曲がなかった彼にとって、このように世間から評価を受けることは思いもよりませんでした。

Gracie’s eponymous debut album in 2018 is the sound of an artist bit-by-bit breaking through the hype and the seeds of doubt that stem from heavy expectation. Recorded on-and-off between mid-2015 and late 2017, predominantly overseen by revered producer Markus Dravs (Florence + the Machine, Arcade Fire), Gracie says his first work captures the “darkest, the roughest and most uncertain time in my life.”
‘Last Words’ changed Gracie’s life. No sooner had he written it, he was subject to big figure record deals and comparisons to hero Jeff Buckley in the press. For someone with no knowledge of the music industry and with only a handful more songs to his name, he didn’t feel prepared for this recognition.

Amid the madness there are two constants on this album, and both double up as its biggest strengths: emotional candidness and Gracie’s ability to write sharp, straight-for-the-gut melodies. It’s difficult to think of many other contemporary musicians who can be so direct while dodging the usual pitfalls of self-indulgence or over-earnestness.

Set those motifs aside, however, and Gracie is also a camouflage songwriter – endlessly inventive, capable of mastering several approaches, impossible to pin down. The journeying route his debut takes lifts a lid on the artist he could yet become. Especially ‘The Death of You & I’, which he says marks “more explorative” territory, “a way I’d like to work in the future.” He was only joined by a full band in mid-2016, but it’s this addition of personnel that gives him further licence to explore.

Whereas he was terrified two years ago, he’s fully positive about the future. “I’m still writing songs and I’m really excited about what the future holds,” he states, looking ahead. “I feel, at this point, really ready to put out the record, ready to live by it and ready to learn from it. And then I’ll go forward.”
